We support educators interested in developing maker-centered learning practices. 我们的做法是植根于 机构 by 设计 ideas 和 research findings, from big-picture pedagogy to specific tools for the classroom. 除了我们的节目, we do partner with various schools 和 districts to offer customizable workshops 和 coaching. Workshops range in length from short meetings to multi-day intensives.
机构 by 设计 Oakl和 team members will work with you to design a professional development that meets your needs. If you are interested in 机构 by 设计 Oakl和 workshops or coaching, please email info@abdoakl和.org

Maker Empowerment: An Introduction to the 机构 by 设计框架
Participants in this introductory workshop will explore 和 experience a taste of the 机构 by 设计 research findings 和 teacher tools. The focus is on building a sensitivity to the designed dimensions of the world through h和s-on, collaborative learning experiences designed to make thinking visible. In addition to a collaborative design challenge, learning about 和 practicing the capacities of Maker Empowerment, participants will experience using the 机构 by 设计思维例程 Parts, Purposes, Complexities, 和 see examples of how other educators have used this tool in the classroom. With an additional hour teachers will experience two more thinking routines: Parts, People, Interactions 和 想象一下,如果. Participants will walk away with both the pedagogical background 和 concrete tools to integrate best practices in maker-centered learning into their classroom.
Scaffolding for Student 机构: Maker-Centered Learning Instructional Strategies
How do we structure classroom experiences so that our students become agentic learners? How might we redesign our instructional strategies to incorporate less teacher talk 和更多的 peer-to-peer learning 和 independent figuring it out? In this introductory h和s-on workshop participants will walk away with research-based findings framing the pedagogical benefits of making, as well as concrete instructional strategies on how to design the culture of a classroom/制造商pace that emphasizes a student-centered distributed learning model. Participants will walk away with instructional tools as well as a plan on how they will integrate a maker-centered learning strategy into their classroom environment.
Systems Thinking: How is it 设计ed? 我能做些什么?
Our cell phones, the highway, the desk arrangement in the classroom, institutional racism...everything around us is a designed system. If we expect the next generation to redesign 和 improve these systems we need to give them opportunities to develop systems thinking abilities—in all content areas 和 all grade levels. Systems thinking is essential for learners developing agency as thinkers, 制造商, 设计师, 修补匠, 黑客, 和更多的. In this workshop participants will develop an underst和ing of what a system is, experience a systems hunt, then delve into the complexity of systems while moving through a process of problem finding 和 solving. This workshop can be tweaked to align with specific learning goals 和/or content areas. Participants will practice using three 机构 by 设计思维例程.
Developing Empathy with our Learners
This workshop is designed to inject a quick, strong dose of empathy into the educators at your school site. 使用代理机构 by 设计思维例程 思考,感受,关心, participants will take the perspective of a learner. Through reflection 和 discussion they will be challenged to question their answers 和 perspectives, ultimately revealing their biases 和 challenging their beliefs about their students. Ideally three or more of your learners will be available to collaborate in the design 和 facilitation of this workshop.
机构 by 设计101
This day-long session will go deeply into the research-based findings covered in the recently published book, Maker-Centered Learning: Empowering Young People to Shape Their Worlds. Through h和s-on experiences participants will learn about Maker Empowerment, the capacities of looking closely, 探索复杂性, 寻找机会, 和机构 by 设计思维例程. 协作, 批判性思维, 和 documentation/Making Learning Visible will be key components of all activities. 另外, there will be built in time for participants to think explicitly about bringing maker-centered learning into their classroom practice.
